MAROUBRA BEACH - NSW Beaches -
View Larger Map Maroubra Beach - 11kms south south east of Sydney and within 1km is Arthur Byrne Reserve. Located within Maroubra Bay, Maroubra Beach is a well visited and safe beach, approximately 1km in length, which offers 2 surf clubs - with plenty of parking – both chargeable and free within the surrounding streets and within the South Maroubra Surf Life Saving Club, and is also easily accessible by public transport. Well maintained facilities which includes the Arthur Byrne Reserve where you’re more than welcome to barbeque your own tucker with both barbeques and picnic tables provided, or you can visit one of the many cafes or restaurants – all within walking distance of the beach, and if you’re there with children why not take the opportunity to use the enclosed and shaded children’s playground. Maroubra is an Aboriginal word meaning “place of thunder” and was 1st noted as newsworthy by the shipwreck of an iron ship – “Hereward” – which occurred in May, 1898 at the northern end of the beach. In 1947 the development of the Coral Sea Park was given the go ahead and was completed in 1961 with the name being given as recognition to the 1942 Battle of the Coral Sea. In 2006 Maroubra Beach was named a National Surfing Reserve – the 2nd in Australia to be given this title – the 1st being Bells Beach in Victoria and it has been used for multiple surfing competitions such as the Snickers Australian Open, which in 2004 was won by American Surfing Legend – Kelly Slater. In addition, due to the large size of this beach, there has also being various other sports undertaken here, such as the 2007 Beach Cricket Series between, Australia, England & West Indies – which had Australia & England in the Grand Final with England taking the Trophy.
